"Going to School" by Mdlle. J. Bole, from a photograph by Messrs. Goupil and Co. 1876. The young village maiden of France or Belgium who is demurely walking to the seminary of daily tuition with her large "cahier" of copied manuscript under one arm and with a basket full of lesson-books hanging to the other, has a really pretty face; but she does not look so strong and cheerful as...our English little girls...[Due to the excellent provision for girls schooling] we feel confident that the young women of the next generation in the humblest class of society will possess a degree of cultivated intelligence, a moral dignity and sense of propriety, and a capacity for the business of life, which will put to shame many of the idle young men. It is probable...that the subject of Mdlle. Bole's agreeable picture will be an honour to her own sex, as well as a comfort to some honest fellow of the other sex'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

Going to School

EDITORS COMMENTS
by Mdlle. J. Bole, captured in a photograph by Messrs. Goupil and Co. in 1876, presents a charming image of a young village girl from France or Belgium making her way to her daily seminary. The photograph, which features an unknown creator, showcases the girl carrying a large "cahier" of copied manuscript under one arm and a basket full of lesson-books hanging from the other. Her face, described as "really pretty" by the Illustrated London News in 1876, does not convey the same level of strength and cheerfulness as the English girls of the time. However, the writer expresses optimism for the future of young women in the humblest classes of society, attributing it to the excellent provision for girls' schooling. The belief was that the next generation of young women would possess a high degree of cultivated intelligence, moral dignity, and a sense of propriety, which would put many idle young men to shame. The subject of Mdlle. Bole's agreeable picture is expected to be an honor to her own sex and a comfort to some honest fellow of the other sex. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the importance of education and the impact it can have on individuals and society as a whole.
