EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print features The Right Honourable Francis Charles Granville Egerton, the third Earl of Ellesmere, who was born in London in 1847. The Earl is depicted in formal attire, with a serious expression, as he seconded the Address in the House of Lords. The eldest son of the second Earl, he succeeded his father in 1862 and was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. The peerages of Ellesmere and Brackley were first acquired by the distinguished Lord Chancellor Egerton, whose descendant was later created Duke of Bridgwater. The Earl is shown here with a moustache and sideburns, typical of the fashion of the late 19th century. He is also known for his involvement in horse racing and was a prominent landowner and aristocrat. The photograph was published in the prestigious Illustrated London News in 1876. The Earl's distinguished lineage, education, and accomplishments make this an intriguing and historically significant portrait.
