Chimney Rock, near Fountain City, 1874. Creator: Alfred Waud
Chimney Rock, near Fountain City, 1874. Rock formation on the River Mississippi in Wisconsin, USA. In the foreground men steer a large raft with oars - smoke issues from one of the timber buildings on the raft. On the right is a paddle steamer. The spectator who views this peculiar mass of limestone from above the river will fail to see why it received its name. But, from below, and passing abreast, one observes that the extreme mass on the right hand is altogether detached, and presents a very striking resemblance to the enormous stone chimneys which are built up outside the houses in Virginia. Chimney Rock - A Majestic Limestone Formation on the Mississippi River in 1874
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print by Alfred Waud transports us back to the scenic beauty of Chimney Rock, near Fountain City, Wisconsin, in 1874. The image captures a mesmerizing rock formation rising from the river's edge, its name derived from its resemblance to towering stone chimneys found in Virginia. In the foreground, we witness men skillfully maneuvering a large raft with oars while smoke billows out from one of the timber buildings perched upon it. To the right, a paddle steamer gracefully glides through the waters of this magnificent river. Waud's artistic eye and attention to detail bring this picturesque landscape to life. His engraving showcases not only nature's grandeur but also human activity along these historic waterways. The log cabins dotting the shoreline remind us of those who once called this place home and their connection to both land and water. As we gaze upon this timeless scene captured over a century ago, we are reminded of America's rich geographical heritage and our nation's deep ties to transportation and exploration. This print serves as a testament to Waud's talent as an artist and his dedication to capturing moments that tell stories beyond words. Let us cherish this glimpse into history—a moment frozen in time—where nature meets industry on the banks of one of America’s most iconic rivers.
