Alfred in the Neatherds Cottage, (mid 19th century). Creator: J Rogers

Alfred in the Neatherds Cottage, (mid 19th century). Youngest son of King AEthelwulf, Alfred (849-899 AD) became King of Wessex during a time of constant Viking attack. He was driven into hiding by a Viking raid into Wessex, led by the Dane, Guthorm, and took refuge in the Athelney marshes in Somerset. According to legend, he was given shelter by a peasant woman who, unaware of his identity, told him to watch some wheaten cakes she had left cooking on the fire. He is shown here flexing his bow, as the neatherds wife rebukes him for allowing her cakes to burn. [John Tallis & Company, London & New York]

Alfred the Great - A King in Hiding

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print, we are transported back to the mid-19th century, where J Rogers skillfully captures a pivotal moment in history. The image portrays Alfred, the youngest son of King AEthelwulf, during his time of refuge in a humble Neatherds Cottage. As Wessex faced relentless Viking attacks, Alfred found himself driven into hiding by Guthorm's raid. Seeking solace from danger, he sought shelter within the Athelney marshes of Somerset. Legend has it that an unknowing peasant woman offered him sanctuary and entrusted him with her wheaten cakes cooking on the fire. Here we see Alfred flexing his bow while being gently scolded by the neatherds wife for allowing her precious cakes to burn. The monochrome setting adds depth and intensity to this historical moment as we witness a king reduced to anonymity amidst poverty-stricken surroundings. This engraving not only showcases Francis Wheatley's exceptional attention to detail but also invites us to reflect upon Alfred's resilience and determination during these troubled times. His eventual rise as King of Wessex would mark a turning point in British history. Thanks to John Tallis & Company for preserving this remarkable piece that immortalizes one man's struggle against adversity and reminds us of the strength that lies within even when circumstances seem dire.
