Aholibah - painted by E. Armitage, 1850. Exhibition at the Royal Academy in London. Mr. Armitage's Picture...is an embodiment of a passage in Ezekiel, Aholibah (Jerusalem) doting on the Chaldeans. (Ezekiel, xxiii.) The accessories of the painting are suggested by the recently discovered Nimroud sculptures...Aholibah, (486) [in the catalogue], has more merit than many who pass it by too quickly are willing to allow. Aholibah is no beauty, it is true, but she is full of character and truth'. Monumental stone statues from the ancient site of Nineveh, in what is now Iraq, had recently been loaded onto ships on the River Euphrates and brought to the British Museum in London. EDITORS COMMENTS
Aholibah," painted by Edward Armitage in 1850, is a captivating work of art that tells a biblical story through vivid imagery. Commissioned by Smith & Cheltnam and exhibited at the Royal Academy in London, this masterpiece is based on the passage from the Book of Ezekiel (xxiii) about the sorrowful love of Aholibah (Jerusalem) for the Chaldeans. The painting embodies the rich cultural exchange of the 19th century, as the accessories are inspired by the recently discovered Nimroud sculptures from ancient Assyria, now in the British Museum. Aholibah, number 486 in the catalogue, may not be a beauty in the conventional sense, but her character and truth resonate with viewers who take the time to appreciate her. In the painting, Aholibah is depicted as a woman of the people, with a handheld fan made of peacock feathers fanning herself in a room adorned with a mural. The monochromatic palette, reminiscent of the black and white illustrations of the time, adds to the somber mood of the scene. Aholibah's occupation as a servant is suggested by her simple attire and the job she is performing, yet her expression conveys a sense of longing and regret. This painting, with its biblical themes and exotic influences, is a testament to the power of art to transport us to different times and places, inviting us to ponder the human condition and the stories that have shaped our history.
