Spinal cord, LM
Spinal cord. Light micrograph (LM) of a cross-section through the human spinal cord in the lumbar region. The spinal cord consists of a butterfly-shaped core (dark blue) known as grey matter, which consists of nerve cells. Surrounding the grey matter is a larger region of white matter, made up of myelinated nerve fibre bundles or tracts. It is the white matter which is largely responsible for transmitting impulses. The spinal cord is wrapped in three layers of membrane called the meninges (outer edge). The cord extends from the stem of the brain to vertebrae of the lower back; 31 pairs of nerves arise along its length (visible in the space between the cord and the meninges), carrying information to and from the brain and body. Magnification: x20 at 10 cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a cross-section of the human spinal cord in the lumbar region, revealing its intricate structure and vital functions. At first glance, one is immediately drawn to the butterfly-shaped core known as grey matter, depicted in a striking dark blue hue. This central region consists of nerve cells that play a crucial role in processing sensory information and coordinating motor responses. Surrounding the grey matter lies an expansive area of white matter composed of myelinated nerve fibre bundles or tracts. It is within this white matter that impulses are primarily transmitted throughout the spinal cord, facilitating communication between different parts of the body and the brain. The complexity and fragility of this essential organ are further emphasized by its protective layers called meninges, visible at the outer edge. These three membranes shield and support the delicate spinal cord as it extends from the brainstem down to vertebrae in our lower back. Additionally, this remarkable image reveals 31 pairs of nerves arising along its length, clearly visible within the space between the cord and meninges. These nerves act as conduits for transmitting vital information to and from both our brain and body. Captured with meticulous precision at a magnification level of x20 on a 10 cm wide scale by renowned photographer Steve Gschmeissner/Science Photo, this mesmerizing artwork offers us an awe-inspiring glimpse into one of nature's most extraordinary creations – our own spinal cord.
