Coatee of General Sir William Napier (fabric)

5924541 Coatee of General Sir William Napier (fabric) by British School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Coatee of General Sir William Napier.
Napiers early career was helped by Sir John Moore, who secured him a captaincy in the 43rd (Monmouthshire) Light Infantry. Napier fought with the rearguard during the retreat to Corunna, and went on to serve with distinction in Wellingtons Army. He was severely wounded in 1811 when a musket ball lodged against his spine, but recovered sufficiently to command the 43rd in the battles of Salamanca and Nivelle.
In addition to his military achievements in the Peninsular War (1808-1814), Napier gained further fame as its historian. He wrote a six volume history of the war, which was published between 1828 and 1840 and widely translated. Napier died in 1860, aged 75.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print showcases the Coatee of General Sir William Napier, a remarkable piece of fabric that holds great historical significance. This exquisite garment belonged to General Sir William Napier, whose early career was shaped by his association with Sir John Moore. With Moore's assistance, Napier secured a captaincy in the 43rd (Monmouthshire) Light Infantry. Napier's military journey led him to fight valiantly during the retreat to Corunna and serve with distinction in Wellington's Army. Despite suffering a severe injury caused by a musket ball lodged against his spine in 1811, he recovered remarkably well and went on to command the 43rd in significant battles such as Salamanca and Nivelle. Beyond his military achievements, Napier gained further fame as an esteemed historian of the Peninsular War (1808-1814). He authored a comprehensive six-volume history of this war between 1828 and 1840, which garnered widespread acclaim and translations into various languages. General Sir William Napier passed away at the age of 75 in 1860 but left behind an enduring legacy both as a courageous soldier and an accomplished writer. The Coatee displayed here is not only a symbol of his distinguished service but also represents his contribution to documenting one of Europe's most significant conflicts. This print from Fine Art Finder allows us to appreciate not only the intricate details of this historic uniform but also serves as a reminder of General Sir William Napier's lasting impact on British military history.
