This engraving depicts the pivotal Battle of Antietam, which took place on September 17, 1862, during the American Civil War (1861-1865). The Battle of Antietam is considered the single bloodiest day in the history of the Western Hemisphere, with over 22,000 casualties. The Union Army, led by General George B. McClellan, clashed with the Confederate Army, commanded by General Robert E. Lee, in Sharpsburg, Maryland. The engagement is significant as it halted Lee's invasion into the North and is often regarded as a turning point in the war. The engraving showcases the intense combat between the two armies, with soldiers from both sides locked in hand-to-hand combat and artillery duels in the background. The Union Army is depicted in the center, with their blue uniforms contrasting against the brown landscape and the Confederate Army on the right, in their gray uniforms.
