EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the portrait of Donald Cargill, a prominent figure in Scottish history. The image is derived from "The Scots Worthies According to Howies Second Edition" by John Howie, published in 1879. Created by an English artist during the 19th century, this lithograph captures the essence of Cargill's character and significance. Donald Cargill (1619-81) was a Scottish Covenanter who played a crucial role in the Battle of Bothwell Bridge in 1679. Injured during the battle, he sought refuge in the Netherlands before returning to Scotland in 1680. However, upon his return, he was arrested and sentenced to death for his religious beliefs. The portrait portrays Cargill as a young man with determination etched on his face. His shawl adds an air of mystery and resilience to his persona. As a Presbyterian minister and field preacher, he fervently fought for religious freedom amidst political turmoil. Cargill's unwavering commitment to his faith led him down a path that ultimately cost him his life. He was beheaded in Edinburgh as a martyr for his cause. This print not only serves as an artistic representation but also acts as a historical testament to one man's unwavering dedication and sacrifice during the tumultuous seventeenth century. It stands as both an homage to Donald Cargill's legacy and an embodiment of artistry capturing significant moments from our past.
