Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers. Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "A Home Agricultural Show, 1927" takes us back in time to a bygone era. Created as a colour lithograph by the talented artist Gregory Brown, this piece is now housed at the prestigious Manchester Art Gallery in the UK. Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by Haycock, Cadle & Graham Ltd for HMSO, this artwork was part of a larger collection of artist-designed posters aimed at promoting sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain and its territories. The Manchester Art Gallery holds an impressive assortment of these thought-provoking posters that were created between 1926 and 1933. While these images beautifully depict various aspects of life within the British Empire - its people, places, and products - they also raise important questions about the legacy of imperialism. For contemporary viewers, it serves as a reminder to critically examine our history and consider how it shapes our present. With over 200 posters acquired during the 1930s from this campaign alone, Manchester Art Gallery provides an opportunity for visitors to engage with both artistry and historical context. This particular print transports us to an agricultural show from nearly a century ago – offering glimpses into rural life during that time period. As we admire this stunning piece captured through Bridgeman Images' lens on behalf of Fine Art Finder, let us reflect upon not only its aesthetic beauty but also its potential to spark conversations about our shared past.
