EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Coffin of Nakhtkhnum, a remarkable artifact from ancient Egypt dating back to approximately 1802-1640 BC. Crafted with wood and adorned with intricate paintwork, this coffin measures an impressive 207.5 centimeters in length and is currently housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The coffin's painted door holds great significance as it symbolizes the soul's ability to freely traverse between the realms of life and death. Positioned above this portal are two eyes that gaze into the land of the living, while behind them lies the face of the mummy itself. The surface is adorned with carefully crafted hieroglyphic inscriptions, serving as invocations to various deities associated with death and rebirth such as Osiris, known as the foremost god of the dead, and Anubis, revered as the god of embalming. Every detail on this ornate piece speaks volumes about ancient Egyptian beliefs surrounding funerary practices and their strong faith in an afterlife. The decorative elements reflect a rich tapestry of gods, goddesses, figures from mythology, symbols representing life along Nile River - all intricately intertwined within hieroglyphics. As we admire this stunning artwork captured by Bridgeman Images through Fine Art Finder, we are transported back in time to witness not only a beautifully decorated coffin but also gain insight into one civilization's profound beliefs about life beyond death.
