View of Grey Street, Newcastle upon Tyne (b / c, ink & w / c on paper)

473948 View of Grey Street, Newcastle upon Tyne (b/c, ink & w/c on paper)
by Dobson, John (1787-1865); 41.2x27.5 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: Grey Street was the centrepiece of the 1830s redevelopment of the centre of Newcastle by the businessman Richard Grainger. The Newcastle architect John Dobson designed the lower east side of the street, shown in this view, which was drawn by Dobson himself. Dobsons picture may have been made before the buildings were actually finished, as a demonstration of how fine they would look. The grand Neo-Classical style stone buildings became the commercial heart of Newcastle, replacing the previous centre on the quayside.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning view of Grey Street in Newcastle upon Tyne, beautifully captured by the talented artist John Dobson. Measuring 41.2x27.5 cm, this ink and watercolor on paper artwork is housed at the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK. Grey Street holds immense historical significance as it was the focal point of Richard Grainger's ambitious redevelopment project in the 1830s. Designed by renowned architect John Dobson himself, this particular view depicts the lower east side of Grey Street before its completion. Dobson's meticulous attention to detail is evident in this drawing, which may have been created as a visual representation of how magnificent these buildings would appear once finished. The grand Neo-Classical style stone structures became the bustling commercial center of Newcastle, replacing its former hub located on the quayside. This image offers a glimpse into daily life during the 19th century and highlights both architectural design and urban development. It serves as a testament to Dobson's artistic prowess and his contribution to shaping Newcastle's landscape. The inclusion of this print within Fine Art Finder allows art enthusiasts worldwide to appreciate not only Dobson's talent but also gain insight into an important chapter in Newcastle's history.
