EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Atlantic Tree Rat, a fascinating creature from the 19th century. The image, created by an unknown German artist, is part of a private collection and was originally published in Leopold Joseph Fitzinger's "Bilder-Atlas zur wissenschaftlich-populären Naturgeschichte der Säugetiere in ihren sämtlichen Hauptformen" in 1860. The lithograph depicts several species of rats, including the brown Ramsratte, white-tailed Lanzenratte, common Ferkelratte or Hutia Conga, American swamp beaver or Coypu, and Schweifbiber. Each rat is meticulously illustrated with vibrant colors and intricate details that bring them to life on paper. Among these rodents is the Atlantic Tree Rat itself – a unique mammal known for its thick spines and wild appearance. Its presence adds an element of intrigue to this already captivating composition. This print not only serves as an artistic representation but also provides valuable insights into the diverse world of mammals. It highlights both familiar creatures like wild rats while introducing lesser-known species such as Cercomys cunicularius, Nelomys apereoides, Loncheres paleacea, Hoplomys Capromys fournieri Geocapromys Myopotamus coypu). Preserved through time by ePurix Verlag Volker Christen's efforts to keep it out of copyright restrictions; this image continues to captivate
