EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite beauty of nature through the depiction of two distinct creatures - The Red and Blue Brazilian Finch and The Flying Squirrel. Created by George Edwards in 1749-73, this coloured engraving is a true masterpiece that captures the essence of these remarkable animals. The Red and Blue Brazilian Finch, with its vibrant plumage of red and blue hues, stands proudly on a branch. Its delicate features are meticulously portrayed, showcasing every intricate detail from its slender beak to its elegant feathers. This finch represents the diversity and splendor found within Brazil's avian population. Beside it, we find The Flying Squirrel gracefully suspended mid-air. With dilute fusco coloring, this American squirrel displays an extraordinary ability to glide effortlessly through the forest canopy. Its outstretched limbs convey a sense of freedom as it navigates its natural habitat. Originally engraved by George Edwards himself, this particular print has been re-engraved by Michael Seligmann who added his own touch to combine Edwards' work with Catesby's "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". Seligmann translated names into German while incorporating additional figures and plants not present in the original works. Through this collaboration between two talented artists from different eras, we are presented with an enchanting fusion that celebrates both scientific accuracy and artistic expression. This print serves as a testament to humanity's enduring fascination with nature's wonders throughout history.
