EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable Harriet Chalmers Adams at the zoo in 1912. A true trailblazer, Harriet Chalmers Adams (1875-1937) was an American explorer, writer, and photographer who fearlessly ventured into uncharted territories across South America, Asia, and the South Pacific. Her extraordinary journeys were chronicled in the prestigious National Geographic magazine, where she shared her awe-inspiring experiences with readers around the world. Not only did Harriet break barriers as a female journalist during World War I by becoming the sole woman allowed to visit the trenches as a correspondent for Harper's Magazine in Europe, but she also made history by being elected to the Royal Geographical Society of London in 1913. In addition to her numerous accomplishments, she became the first president of the Society of Woman Geographers in 1925. In this photograph taken by Harris & Ewing between their marriage in 1899 and her untimely death in 1937, we see Harriet Chalmers Adams standing beside a llama at the zoo. With a warm smile on her face and an air of intellectual curiosity surrounding her presence, it is evident that she possessed both a deep love for animals and an insatiable thirst for knowledge about different cultures. Harriet's legacy as an explorer, journalist, lecturer, geographer, and photographer continues to inspire generations today. This print serves as a powerful reminder of her pioneering spirit and unwavering dedication to expanding our understanding of our world through exploration and storytelling.
