Blanket of Major Tyrwhitt Drake (textile)

1778399 Blanket of Major Tyrwhitt Drake (textile) by English School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Blanket, blue and red broad striped, said to have been used by Maj Tyrwhitt-Drake at the Battle of Waterloo.
In the colours of the Royal Horse Guards Regiment.
This is the blanket used the night before the Battle of Waterloo by Major Tyrwhitt Drake, to shield himself from the appalling weather. Despite the fact that the battle was fought in the middle of June, it rained torrentially throughout the night, and almost every soldier who fought at Waterloo was wet, cold, and sleepless. Some lit bonfires, some slept in peasants cottages, but Major Drake huddled under this horse blanket with his steed to keep warm.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the historic "Blanket of Major Tyrwhitt Drake" from the 19th century. The blanket, adorned with bold blue and red broad stripes, holds a significant place in British military history as it is said to have been used by Major Tyrwhitt Drake during the Battle of Waterloo. The colors of this textile represent the Royal Horse Guards Regiment, adding a touch of regality to its already remarkable story. It served as a protective shield for Major Drake on that fateful night before the battle when torrential rain poured relentlessly upon the soldiers. Despite being fought in June, many warriors were left wet, cold, and sleepless. While some sought refuge in bonfires or peasants' cottages, Major Drake found solace under this very horse blanket alongside his loyal steed. This image captures not only an artifact but also a testament to human resilience and resourcefulness amidst adversity.
