EDITORS COMMENTS

Created by Mitsunobu, Tosa in 1495, this ink, color, and gold masterpiece measures 34.3x1044 cm and is housed at the Freer Gallery of Art in the Smithsonian Institution. The artwork depicts a significant legend surrounding Prince Shotoku Taishi and his instruction to Buddhist monk Nichira to find a sacred location for a temple. After an extensive search, Nichira was guided by supernatural signs to a tree in Settsu Province. Astonishingly, when the tree fell down, it revealed a fully formed statue of Senju Kannon on its trunk. The intricate calligraphy accompanying this illustration is believed to be the work of Fujiwara Kinnatsu. The scene captures not only the spiritual essence but also offers glimpses into rural life during that period with its coastal backdrop and serene countryside setting. With its rich history and profound symbolism rooted in Buddhism, this artwork transports viewers back in time while showcasing Japan's cultural heritage. It serves as a testament to both artistic mastery and religious devotion.
