Repin began to take an interest in the theme of the Temptation of Christ from 1873, after hearing the stories of the painter Ivan Kramskoy on the genesis of his Christ in the desert (1872, Moscow, State Tretyakov Gallery). He did not work on this subject himself until 1890. After many studies, in 1898 he made a trip to Palestine to the holy places. But he takes up his painting so much later that it becomes a burden for him. The canvas, damaged during a fire in his workshop, is finally destroyed by Repine. is a captivating oil on canvas painting by Ilya Efimovich Repin. This masterpiece, now housed in the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Calais, France, depicts the artist's exploration of the biblical theme of Christ's temptation. Repin's fascination with this subject began in 1873 when he heard stories from fellow painter Ivan Kramskoy about his own work on "Christ in the Desert". However, it wasn't until 1890 that Repin himself started working on this profound theme. In 1898, he even embarked on a journey to Palestine to visit holy sites related to Christ's life and ministry. Unfortunately, due to various challenges and setbacks faced by Repin during the creation process, including damage caused by a fire in his workshop, the final canvas was ultimately destroyed by the artist himself. Today, only sketches remain as evidence of this lost masterpiece. "The Temptation of Christ" showcases Repin's deep connection with religious themes and his commitment to capturing their essence through art.
