EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Support Your Best Customers, from the series Where Our Exports Go, c. 1927" captures a vibrant and captivating moment in British history. Created by William Grimmond in 1884-1952, this colour litho artwork is held at the Manchester Art Gallery in the UK. Part of an extensive collection commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board (EMB) between 1926 and 1933, this particular piece aims to promote British prosperity through a growing export trade. The EMB's objective was to increase sales of goods produced within the British Empire across Great Britain, its Dominions, and Colonies. Manchester Art Gallery acquired over 200 artist-designed posters from this campaign during the 1930s. These visually striking images depict various aspects of life within the Empire - its people, places, and products. However, for contemporary viewers, these posters also raise uncomfortable questions about the legacies of empire today. This specific print showcases a dynamic scene that encourages citizens to support their best customers. It serves as a reminder of Britain's economic strength derived from exporting goods worldwide. With bold colors and intricate details characteristic of Grimmond's work, it captivates viewers with its historical significance and artistic brilliance. As part of Fine Art Finder's collection provided by Bridgeman Images on behalf of Manchester Art Gallery (not for commercial use), this photograph print offers an opportunity to explore both our past achievements as well as critically reflect upon our present-day understanding of empire dynamics and their impact on global commerce.
