The Life of Charles Dickens
I beg your pardon sir, : he answered, but if it hadn t been for my pipe, I should have been nowhere.
Dickens often held cricket matches at his Gadshill home in Higham, Kent but once held footraces for the villagers at Christmas in which one event was A Hurdle Race For Strangers. One man (who came second) ran 120 yards and leaped over ten hurdles in 20 seconds with a pipe in his mouth smoking it all the time. Dickens comment to him was If it hadn t been for your pipe, you would have been first.

The Life of Charles Dickens - A Glimpse into the Victorian Era
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we are transported back to the 19th century, immersing ourselves in the life and times of one of literature's greatest figures - Charles Dickens. The image captures a moment from his Gadshill home in Higham, Kent, where he often held cricket matches and village fairs. Dickens was known for his wit and humor, as well as his love for sports and entertainment. One particular event that stood out was a footrace during Christmas festivities. Aptly named "A Hurdle Race For Strangers" it showcased the extraordinary talents of ordinary villagers. The man depicted in this illustration came second in the race but ran an impressive 120 yards while leaping over ten hurdles in just 20 seconds – all with a pipe firmly clenched between his teeth! Amused by this feat, Dickens jokingly remarked to him that if it hadn't been for his pipe, he would have secured first place. This print not only offers us a glimpse into Dickens' personal life but also reflects the vibrant spirit of village fairs during that era. It is a testament to both the author's fascination with everyday people and their remarkable abilities. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, let us celebrate Charles Dickens' legacy as an iconic writer who continues to captivate readers worldwide with his timeless tales set against the backdrop of Victorian England.
