How the victorians braved the sea.
Guests wear bathing costumes of the 19 century at London party.
At a party given by Dr W C Cunnington, the North London authority of the Victorian era, women guests wore bathing costumes of the 19 Century. Some of these dresses date back to before 1850 and are the only one of that period in existence.
Photo shows, the bather of 1883 receives a helping hand with her lace costume from a girl wearing the beach dress that was the very latest fashion in 1910.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "How the Victorians Braved the Sea" takes us back in time to a London party hosted by Dr W C Cunnington, an esteemed authority of the Victorian era. The guests at this extraordinary event donned bathing costumes from the 19th century, providing a glimpse into the fashion trends and bravery of that era. The women in attendance wore exquisite dresses that were true relics of history, some even predating 1850. These rare garments are believed to be the only surviving pieces from that period. As we observe this snapshot frozen in time, it becomes evident how much has changed since those days when venturing into the sea was considered quite daring. In this particular scene captured on July 12,1936, we witness a bather from 1883 being assisted by another guest wearing a beach dress that epitomized the latest fashion of 1910. The stark contrast between these two styles highlights not only evolving tastes but also societal shifts during different periods. This photograph is part of Europeana Photography's collection and offers us an intriguing insight into twentieth-century fashion between two world wars. Preserved by Planet News for posterity, it serves as a reminder of our ever-changing world while honoring traditions long gone. This press photography piece numbered as 54808 allows us to appreciate both historical significance and artistic beauty without mentioning any commercial use associated with it.
