Optical computing

Optical computing. Coloured light micrograph of a section through a hybrid electronic-optical circuit board. Optical waveguides (red) are used to transmit data in the form of light pulses. This allows data transfer at faster speeds than is possible through the electronic connections of an ordinary printed circuit board (PCB). Such an increase in data transfer speeds is required to take full advantage of the processing power of the fastest microchips, the calculating components at the heart of a computer. The optical waveguides are 0.001-millimetre-wide plastic strips. This technology has been developed by Siemens and the University of Paderborn, Germany

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the cutting-edge field of optical computing, revolutionizing data transfer speeds in electronic circuits. The image captures a cross-section of a hybrid electronic-optical circuit board, revealing a network of vibrant red optical waveguides that transmit data using light pulses. Developed by Siemens and the University of Paderborn in Germany, this groundbreaking technology enables faster data transfer than traditional printed circuit boards (PCBs) can achieve through their electronic connections. At just 0.001 millimeters wide, these plastic strips act as conduits for transmitting information at unprecedented speeds, allowing computers to fully harness the processing power of advanced microchips. By utilizing optic fibers instead of conventional electronics, this innovation paves the way for enhanced performance and efficiency in future computer systems. The significance of this breakthrough lies in its potential to unlock new realms of technological advancement. As our reliance on computers continues to grow exponentially, so does our need for faster and more efficient data transmission methods. This research represents an important step towards meeting those demands. While commercial applications are not mentioned here, it is clear that this development holds immense promise for industries reliant on high-speed data processing such as telecommunications or scientific research. With its striking visual representation and profound implications for the future of computing technology, this print serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of progress in the digital age.
