Closed and open stomata on tobacco leaf
Scanning electron micrograph of an closed (at left) and open stoma on the surface of a tobacco leaf Nicotiana tabacum. Stomata are breathing pores scattered over the leaf surface, & sometimes stem, that regulate the exchange of gases between the leafs interior & the atmosphere. Stomatal closure is a natural response to darkness or drought as a means of conserving water. Each pore is controlled by the turgor of two guard cells on either side of it; when they are full of water the pore is open; when they lose turgor, the pore closes. Magnification X2200 (at 10x8 size)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a tobacco leaf, specifically focusing on closed and open stomata. The scanning electron micrograph reveals the surface of a Nicotiana tabacum leaf, where these breathing pores are scattered. Stomata play a crucial role in regulating gas exchange between the leaf's interior and the surrounding atmosphere. On the left side of the image, we observe a closed stoma. This natural response is triggered by darkness or drought as an effective water conservation mechanism. When turgor pressure decreases within two guard cells flanking each pore, they lose their fullness and cause closure. Contrastingly, on the right side of this magnified photograph, an open stoma comes into view. It exemplifies how when these guard cells are filled with water and exhibit optimal turgor pressure, they allow gases to freely pass through. The level of detail captured in this SEM (scanning electron micrograph) is truly remarkable at X2200 magnification for its 10x8 size format. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate exploring botany through such stunning visuals that highlight plant anatomy like never before.
