EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to Lemon Street, Truro, Cornwall, in the 1890s. This print captures a bustling scene filled with life and history. As we gaze upon this snapshot from the past, our eyes are drawn up Lemon Street from Lemon Bridge on the left-hand side. The road is alive with horse-drawn cabs and carts, transporting people and goods through the city. A multitude of men, women, and children pose for the photographer's lens, frozen forever in this moment of time. Atop the hill stands St Johns Church's bell tower and Lander Monument; their presence adds an air of grandeur to this vibrant street view. On the left-hand side of the photo stands John Julian and Company's building - once home to auctioneers, house agents, and valuers. Sadly destroyed by fire in 1893 but immortalized within this image. Beyond our frame lies Lemon Quay—a place where stories unfold just out of sight but still part of Truro's rich tapestry. Photographer Arthur William Jordan has skillfully captured not only a city scene but also a glimpse into daily life during that era—men going about their business while women gracefully stroll along these historic streets alongside playful children. This remarkable photograph serves as a window into Truro's past—an invaluable piece preserved by Royal Cornwall Museum for generations to come.
