EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the summer of 1893, capturing a glimpse of the bustling art gallery at the Cornwall County Fisheries Exhibition in Truro. The scene depicts tables and chairs arranged neatly in the center of the gallery, inviting visitors to pause and appreciate the remarkable artwork on display. One notable artist featured in this exhibition was Dorothy Worden, whose masterpieces undoubtedly added an extra touch of elegance to this cultural event. Held in a field atop Lemon Street, this highly anticipated exhibition ran from July 25th for an entire month, attracting art enthusiasts from near and far. The historical significance of this photograph is further highlighted by an advertisement placed in The Cornishman on September 7th, 1893. It announces that materials used for constructing these temporary exhibition buildings would be sold via public auction on September 20th at The Green in Truro. This detail provides insight into both the transitory nature of such events during that era and their impact on local commerce. This glass lantern slide is part of a series documenting various aspects of the Fisheries Exhibition. With its focus on fishing and fisheries as well as occupations related to them, it offers a fascinating glimpse into Victorian-era Cornwall's vibrant maritime culture. From stunning seascapes to boats bobbing gently along coastal waters, these paintings captured not only artistic beauty but also celebrated Cornish heritage
