EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures a piece of history from 1904, showcasing the Players Old Stocks tobacco rectangular counter card. The attention to detail is evident in the heavily embossed card, with its edge cut to resemble a beautifully carved picture frame. At the center of the card, we see a miniature building called "YE OLD STOCKS" presumably an inn situated on a charming street corner. Peering through one of the windows, two pipes with crossed stems catch our eye, accompanied by what appears to be a box of cigarettes or cigars and a tin of tobacco. Across from this quaint establishment stands a man wearing a vibrant red jacket, seated within the stocks—a reminder of past punishments. The top center features a small label bearing the typed note "No. 41" adding an air of authenticity to this nostalgic piece. A hanging loop adorns its top for easy display. Turning over this treasured relic reveals handwritten instructions: "Please return to Sherwood Rise ARCHIVES". It's important to note that this item is not associated with any commercial use but rather serves as part of Nottingham City Photos' collection. Overall, this print encapsulates both craftsmanship and history—an exquisite glimpse into early 20th-century tobacco culture brought back to life through John Player & Sons' Castle Tobacco Factory in Nottingham—a branch proudly representing The Imperial Tobacco Co (of Great Britain & Ireland) Limited.
