EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 1965, we witness an intriguing moment during Stoke City's training session. The players are engaged in a unique activity at the request of Alan Hargreaves, a physical training expert and senior lecturer at Madeley College in Staffordshire. Hargreaves was brought in by Stoke manager Tony Waddington to revolutionize their pre-season training regimen. The image captures the players participating in a "blow-up" exercise, which appears to be both physically demanding and mentally stimulating. This innovative approach aims to enhance their lung capacity and overall fitness levels. As they gather around, one can sense the anticipation and determination on their faces. Amongst them is goalkeeper Bobby Irvine, who takes his turn under the watchful eye of Alan Hargreaves. His focus is evident as he prepares himself for this challenging task. The spirometer device used to measure lung capacity stands nearby, symbolizing the scientific basis upon which Mr. Hargreaves has based his training methods. This photograph not only showcases Stoke City's commitment to pushing boundaries but also highlights the progressive mindset prevalent within football during that era. It serves as a reminder of how sports science has evolved over time and continues to play an integral role in shaping athletes' performance today. Captured by John Robson, this snapshot freezes a moment that encapsulates dedication, innovation, and teamwork - qualities synonymous with both sport and success itself.
