Petula Clark 1958 with Joe Henderson
Petula Clark remains one of the most commercially succesful female singers in the history of British pop music. She started her career by entertainging British troops during the Second World War with other child artists, like Julie Andrews. She also made her first film during this period, in 1944s " A Medal for the General". She became a chart success by the fifties and in 1961 she relocated to France, mainly to try abd shake off her teenage image. After much success she returned to the charts and her 1964 album " Downtown" also broke into the US charts. The single of the same name was awarded a Grammy and went to number one in the states, making Petula Clark the first British female to top the US charts. This success was followed by a string of top tens in America and Britain. This encouraged the BBC and an American Network to give Clark her own TV shows. As her commercial success faded in the sixties Clark returned to film and also musicals. She starred in 1981s " The Sound of Music" and made her Broadway debut in 1993s " Blood Brothers".

EDITORS COMMENTS
Petula Clark 1958 with Joe Henderson: A Snapshot of British Pop Music History In this photo print, we are transported back to the vibrant music scene of 1958, where Petula Clark and Joe Henderson share a moment in time. Petula Clark, an iconic figure in British pop music history, remains one of the most commercially successful female singers to date. Her journey began during World War II when she entertained British troops alongside other child artists like Julie Andrews. Even at a young age, her talent shone brightly. She made her mark in the film industry with her debut performance in "A Medal for the General" (1944). By the fifties, Petula's chart success was undeniable. In an effort to break away from her teenage image, she relocated to France in 1961 but soon returned triumphantly with her album "Downtown" (1964), which not only conquered UK charts but also broke into the US market. The single of the same name earned her a Grammy and secured her place as the first British female artist to top the US charts. This remarkable achievement paved the way for numerous top-ten hits on both sides of the Atlantic and led to television shows produced by BBC and American networks that showcased Petula's immense talent. As commercial success waned in later years, Petula gracefully transitioned into films and musicals such as "The Sound of Music" (1981) and made a dazzling Broadway debut in "Blood Brothers" (1993). This mesmerizing print captures a pivotal moment in Petula Clark's illustrious career—a testament to her enduring legacy within British pop music.
