EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of bravery and heroism displayed by Colour Sergeant Edwin Henry Booth of the 80th Regiment during the intense battle at the Intombi River in the Zulu War of 1879. The image, taken shortly after the event, shows Booth proudly pointing to the Victoria Cross medal that he had been awarded for his actions that day. The Zulu War, which took place between January and September 1879, was a significant military conflict between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom in South Africa. The 80th Regiment, also known as the "Chosen Few," played a pivotal role in the war, and Booth's actions at Intombi River were a testament to their courage and determination. During the battle, Booth led his men in a charge against the Zulu army, despite being heavily outnumbered. He was shot in the leg but continued to fight, rallying his troops and encouraging them to press on. When the British forces eventually retreated, Booth was the last man to leave the field, carrying the regimental colours with him. The Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration in the British honours system, was awarded to Booth for his exceptional bravery and leadership during the battle. The medal, which can be seen in the photograph, bears the inscription "For Valour," a fitting tribute to the heroism of this remarkable soldier. This photograph is not only a testament to the bravery and courage of Colour Sergeant Booth but also to the valour and determination of the 80th Regiment during the Zulu War. It is a powerful reminder of the events of 1879 and the significant role that the British military played in the history of South Africa.
