This evocative photograph captures the poignant moment of departure for soldiers and civilians aboard a transport ship during the First World War, in 1915. The image, taken from Mary Evans Picture Library, transports us back in time to the height of the conflict, as the Great War raged across Europe. The ship, laden with men and supplies, cuts through the choppy waters with determination and resolve. Soldiers, some with determined expressions, others with anxious or melancholic looks, stand at the railings, taking in their final views of the shoreline before embarking on the uncertain journey ahead. Civilians, many with their belongings in tow, can be seen huddled together on the deck, no doubt filled with a mix of fear, hope, and uncertainty as they leave their homes and families behind. The ship's sails are set, and the propellers churn the water, as the vessel sets sail for an unknown destination. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War, and the courage and resilience of those who sailed across the seas to fight for their countries.
