WW1 - HMHS Anglia was a British steam ship requisitioned for use as a hospital ship during the First World War. On 17th November 1915, Anglia was returning from Calais to Dover, carrying 390 injured officers and soldiers. At around 12:30 pm, one mile (1.6 km) east of Folkestone Gate, she hit a mine laid by the German U-boat, UC-5. Despite the assistance of the nearby collier Lusitania, 134 people were killed in the sinking. Date: 1915

This poignant image captures the aftermath of the tragic sinking of HMHS Anglia on November 17, 1915, during the First World War. The British hospital ship, which had been requisitioned to transport injured soldiers and officers from Calais to Dover, struck a mine laid by the German U-boat, UC-5, just one mile east of Folkestone Gate. Despite the efforts of the nearby collier Lusitania to assist in the rescue, 134 lives were lost in the disaster. The Anglia, a British steam ship, was a vital link in the transportation of wounded soldiers during the war, making this event all the more devastating. The ship had been carrying 390 injured servicemen when it hit the mine, and the explosion caused chaos and panic on board. The image shows the Anglia sinking slowly into the English Channel, with smoke rising from the wreckage. The water is filled with debris and the cries of the wounded and distressed can be heard in the background. The Lusitania, a collier, can be seen in the distance, attempting to assist in the rescue efforts.
