EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the enigmatic figures of Anne Baker, Joan Wilmot, and Ellen Greene, three alleged witches from Belvoir, Leicestershire, England, who were brought to trial in 1619. The women, accompanied by their familiars - the supernatural creatures believed to be their companions and assistants in the practice of witchcraft - are depicted with an air of defiance and mystery. Anne Baker, also known as Old Mother Baker, was said to have the ability to transform into an animal and fly through the night sky. Her familiar, a black cat, is seen perched on her shoulder, its eyes gleaming in the dim light. Joan Wilmot, or Old Demdike as she was also known, was believed to have the power to cause harm to livestock and inflict illness on humans. Her familiar, a toad, is shown clinging to her leg, its tongue flicking out as if in anticipation of a command. Ellen Greene, or Old Mother Greene, was rumored to have made a pact with the devil and was said to have the ability to shape-shift into various animals. Her familiar, a rat, is seen gnawing at her skirt, its beady eyes fixed on the viewer with a mischievous glint. The trial of these three women and several others was part of the larger witch hunt that swept through England during the early modern period. The accusations against them were based on hearsay, rumor, and suspicion, and the evidence presented at their trial was largely circumstantial. Despite this, they were found guilty and sentenced to death. Their fates are not recorded, but their story has endured through the centuries, a reminder of the fear and superstition that once gripped society. This photograph, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a haunting glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the supernatural was a very real and terrifying presence in people's lives.
