EDITORS COMMENTS
In this and unusual image from the Mary Evans / Grenville Collins Postcard Collection, dated back to 1907, we witness a scene that defies the conventional norms of child care and nourishment. The photograph depicts a Cuban wet nurse, seated comfortably on a wooden chair, cradling a toddler in her lap. But what sets this scene apart is the active participation of a goat in the feeding process. The goat, with its alert and curious expression, leans over the nurse and the baby, its teats extended, ready to provide nourishment. The nurse's hand gently guides the goat's udder, encouraging the flow of milk into the baby's waiting mouth. The baby, seemingly unaware of the unusual source of his meal, sucks contentedly, his tiny hand reaching out to grasp the goat's ear. This surreal scene, captured in black and white, is a testament to the resourcefulness and adaptability of people in the past. Wet nursing was a common practice during this era, especially in developing countries where mothers were unable to breastfeed their own children due to various reasons. Goats were often kept for their milk, which was used to supplement the mother's milk or in cases where the mother was unable to nurse her child. Despite its bizarre appearance, this image is a reminder of the close relationship between humans and animals, and the ways in which they have relied on each other for survival throughout history. The photograph also invites us to reflect on the unexpected and often unconventional ways in which people have cared for their children and met their basic needs. This image, with its unusual yet compelling composition, is a fascinating glimpse into the past and a reminder of the rich and complex history of child care and nourishment.
