This image transports us back to the year 1555, during the English Reformation, when naval warfare took a dramatic turn with the use of fireships against coastal defenses. The print, titled "Using Fireships against Coastal Defences," showcases the strategic employment of these incendiary vessels by the English navy under the command of Sir John Cheke. Fireships, also known as "hellships" or "sea serpents," were essentially large ships filled with combustible materials, such as tar, pitch, and sulphur, which were set alight before being rammed into enemy vessels or harbors. The resulting explosion and ensuing fire would cause significant damage to the targeted ships and installations.
