EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative illustration depicts the anxious crowds gathered outside Buckingham Palace on the night of May 6, 1910, following the deteriorating health of King Edward VII. The king, who had been suffering from various ailments for several years, had taken a turn for the worse earlier that evening. As the hours ticked by, the public waited with bated breath for news of the monarch's condition. The illustration shows several people huddled around the palace gates, intently reading the successive bulletins that had been posted throughout the evening. The time on the clock in the top right corner reads 11:21pm, and the latest bulletin, which has just been posted, states that the king's condition is critical and that he has lapsed into a deep sleep. The sense of anticipation and unease is palpable, as the crowd braces itself for the possibility of a royal demise. King Edward VII, who was known for his love of life and his ability to rally the British people, had reigned since 1901. His death at the age of 65 came as a shock to the nation, and the outpouring of grief was immense. The following day, the palace gates were thronged with mourners, who came to pay their respects to the late king and to offer their condolences to the royal family. This historical illustration, which captures the mood of the moment so poignantly, is a poignant reminder of the impact of a monarch's death on the people of a nation. It is a powerful reminder of the human connection to history and the enduring legacy of the monarchy.
