EDITORS COMMENTS
The Taking of Breda," a pivotal moment in Dutch history, is depicted in this print from 1590. Maurits van Nassau, Prince of Orange and a key figure in the Dutch struggle for independence from Spanish rule, stands triumphantly at the center, overseeing the successful capture of the heavily fortified city of Breda. The Spanish, underestimating the cunning of the Dutch forces, had grown complacent in their belief that Breda's defenses were impregnable. Maurits, however, devised an ingenious plan inspired by the ancient Greek tale of the Trojan Horse. A large ship, laden with turf, was constructed and sailed up the River Mark, concealing Dutch troops within its hull. Upon reaching the city walls, the ship was hoisted over them, allowing the soldiers to penetrate the defenses and take Breda by surprise. This event marked a significant turning point in the Dutch War of Independence, boosting morale and demonstrating the resourcefulness and determination of the Dutch forces. The print captures the excitement and drama of the moment, with the smoke of battle rising in the background and the Dutch flag proudly unfurled atop the city walls. The successful capture of Breda not only strengthened the Dutch position in their struggle for independence but also solidified Maurits van Nassau's reputation as a brilliant military strategist. This historical print, with its intricate details and vivid colors, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of courage, cunning, and the indomitable spirit of the Dutch people in their quest for freedom.
