EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative black-and-white photograph captures a snowy street scene along the Indian/Afghan border in the region of Baluchistan. The tranquil image belies the historical significance of the place, which was once the site of intense political and territorial struggles. The building on the left, standing proudly against the winter backdrop, is the Sandeman Memorial Hall, erected in 1889 in honor of Sir Robert G. Sandeman (1825-1892). Sandeman, a Scottish civil servant, is renowned for his peaceful conquest of Baluchistan, a feat achieved through diplomacy and understanding of local customs rather than military force. The road, barely visible under the thick blanket of snow, once served as a vital artery for trade and communication between India and Afghanistan. Carriages, laden with goods, would have traversed this route, braving the harsh winter conditions. The image transports us back in time, offering a glimpse into the history of this strategically important borderland. Sir Robert G. Sandeman, a Knight Commander of the Star of India (KCSI), dedicated his life to the service of the British Raj. His legacy extends beyond Baluchistan, as he is also remembered for his role in the annexation of the princely state of Jodhpur. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the rich history and complex geopolitics of the Indian subcontinent and its neighboring regions.
