This evocative photograph captures the last cruise of five historic steam warships, which once played a crucial role in the defense of the British coastline. From left to right, the monitors Hydra, Glatton, Cyclops, Gorgon, and Hecate were all part of the Royal Navy's Coastal Defense Fleet, which saw active service during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These monitors, which were designed to protect against torpedo attacks and minefields, were an essential component of the British naval forces during a time of great geopolitical tension. They were primarily used for coastal defense and were not intended for long-range engagements or high-seas battles. The Hydra, Glatton, Cyclops, Gorgon, and Hecate were all built between 1893 and 1902 and were retired from active service between 1919 and 1922.
