This intriguing pack of cards, hailing from the pivotal Spanish Civil War of 1820-1823, offers a unique glimpse into the political and military events of that era. Known as the "Triennium Liberal," this period marked a significant shift in Spanish history, as the people of Madrid rose up against the absolutist rule of King Ferdinand VII and demanded the restoration of the liberal constitution of 1812. The cards in this deck are decorated with the portraits of key figures from the conflict, including Generals Rafael del Riego and Pedro Laín Entralgo, who played instrumental roles in the uprising. Riego, a military officer and liberal politician, is depicted on the Ace of Spades, while Laín Entralgo, a military commander, graces the King of Clubs. The Jokers of the deck feature the portraits of Pedro Caro and Francisco Espoz y Mina, two other prominent liberals who played crucial roles during the Triennium Liberal. Caro, a journalist and politician, is shown on the Joker of Hearts, while Espoz y Mina, a military leader, appears on the Joker of Diamonds.
