EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Antoine Jussieu's "Dictionnaire de Naturalisation," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837, showcases two fascinating species from the natural world: the North American skunk, Mephitis mephitis, and the endangered Kamchatka sea otter, Enhydra lutris. The skunk, depicted on the left side of the image, is a well-known North American mammal recognized for its distinctive odor, which it uses as a defense mechanism. With its distinctive black and white stripes, the skunk is a captivating subject, and its alert posture in this illustration highlights its agility and intelligence. On the right side of the image, the Kamchatka sea otter, an endangered species, is shown gracefully floating on its back in the water. Sea otters are the smallest and most dense of marine mammals, and they are renowned for their unique ability to use tools, such as rocks, to crack open shellfish. The intricate details of the sea otter's fur, which is the densest of any mammal, are beautifully captured in this engraving. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, a French naturalist and artist, and was engraved by Terreni, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Batelli e Figli published this stunning work of art, which is a testament to the natural history illustration of the 19th century. This image offers a glimpse into the natural world of over 180 years ago and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving endangered species like the Kamchatka sea otter for future generations.
