This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the skeleton of a Pterodactylus, an extinct carnivorous flying reptile from the Jurassic era. The intricate details of the skeleton are beautifully rendered, revealing the complex structure of this ancient creature's anatomy. The Pterodactylus was a pioneering member of the pterosaur family, which translates to "winged reptiles." With a wingspan of up to 12 feet, this fearsome predator ruled the skies during the Middle Jurassic period, around 161 million years ago. This illustration was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The engraving was executed by Massard, under the direction of Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The image is taken from Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles, published between 1816 and 1830. The skeleton is shown in a naturalistic setting, with various fish and other creatures surrounding it, possibly indicating the Pterodactylus's diet.
