The SM93, manufactured by Società Idrovolanti Alto Italiana Marchetti, boasted several distinctive features that set it apart from its predecessor. Most notably, it incorporated a prone pilot position, offering improved protection and visibility during low-level attacks. The SM93 was designed during the late stages of World War II, with production beginning in 1944. Despite the challenging circumstances, the Italian engineers worked tirelessly to create a versatile and effective ground-attack aircraft. The SM93 was equipped with a 1,000 hp Alfa Romeo RC.41-TC engine, enabling it to reach impressive speeds of up to 375 mph. The SM93 underwent extensive testing by the Luftwaffe in an effort to assess its potential as a Stuka replacement. Though it displayed promising performance and capabilities, the political climate and the advancing Allied forces ultimately hindered its adoption.
