In this print, the mythological figure of Scylla, a daughter of Nisus, is depicted in a poignant moment of transformation. The story of Scylla and Minos is a classic tale of forbidden love and its tragic consequences, as told in ancient Greek mythology. Scylla, a beautiful and enchanting nymph, was deeply in love with Minos, the powerful king of Crete and a sworn enemy of her father, Nisus. Unable to resist her feelings, Scylla betrayed her father and revealed to Minos a secret strategic point on the coast, allowing him to launch a successful attack against Nisus and his people. Upon discovering the treachery of his daughter, Minos was filled with shock and disbelief. He could not comprehend how someone he held in such high regard could betray him in such a way. The revelation left him feeling deeply appalled and heartbroken. In response to Scylla's betrayal, Minos rejected her, leaving her devastated and heartbroken. Unable to bear the weight of her guilt and the rejection of the man she loved, Scylla threw herself into the sea in despair. As she sank into the depths of the water, the gods took pity on her and transformed her into a lark, a beautiful and graceful bird that sings a mournful song as a reminder of her tragic past. This print captures the moment of Scylla's transformation, as she takes her final breaths as a human and emerges as a lark, her wings spread wide in the sky.
