EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, published by F. G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830, depicts two intriguing reptiles native to Madagascar: the Saw-scaled Viper (Echis carinatus) and the Madagascar Leafnose Snake (Langaha madagascariensis). The illustration, directed by Turpin and engraved by Massard, was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre, a renowned painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Saw-scaled Viper, aptly named for the distinctive saw-like scales along its body, is a highly venomous snake found throughout Africa and southern Asia. Its triangular head and elliptical pupils are clearly visible in this detailed engraving. The snake's body is adorned with intricate patterns, making it a formidable and beautiful creature. The Madagascar Leafnose Snake, on the other hand, is a unique and fascinating reptile, easily identified by its elongated, leaf-shaped nasal scales. This snake, also known as Hippolyte's Leafnose Snake in honor of its discoverer, Hippolyte Cloquet, is endemic to Madagascar. Its coloration varies from light brown to dark brown with a white or yellow underbelly. This exquisite engraving not only showcases the natural beauty of these two reptiles but also serves as an important historical record of their appearance and characteristics. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring these fascinating creatures to life, providing a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of Madagascar during the early 19th century.
