EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the Supermarine 508, registration number VX133, takes to the skies with the second prototype Swift, VV119, providing a protective escort in its later Type 535 configuration. The Supermarine 508, also known as the Spiteful, was a British single-engine, two-seat, all-metal fighter aircraft, designed and built by Supermarine Aviation Works, a subsidiary of Vickers-Armstrongs. The Spiteful was a development of the Supermarine Seafang, which was intended for use as a naval fighter. However, due to the cancellation of the Seafang project, the Spiteful was adapted for use as a land-based fighter instead. The Swift, registration number VV119, seen in the background of the photograph, is also a remarkable aircraft. It was the first British jet fighter to enter service with the Royal Air Force (RAF), and it played a significant role in the development of British jet technology. In its later Type 535 configuration, the Swift was used as a fighter-interceptor and trainer. The Swift that is seen in the photograph went on to achieve even greater fame when it was used as the star of the film "Sound Barrier," released in 1952. In the movie, the Swift, renamed "Prometheus," was flown by RAF test pilot Group Captain Peter Quentin, portrayed by David Niven, as he attempted to break the sound barrier. The film was a groundbreaking production, both in terms of its technical accuracy and its groundbreaking special effects. This photograph captures a moment in aviation history, with two iconic British aircraft, the Supermarine 508 and the Swift, flying together in formation. It is a reminder of the pioneering spirit and technical innovation that characterized the post-war British aviation industry.
