EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the legendary figure of Dick Turpin, the notorious 18th century English highwayman, as he makes his daring escape from London to York on the back of his beloved mare, Black Bess. Born in 1706, Turpin was a man of many disguises and aliases, who gained infamy for his audacious robberies on the open road. The year was 1739, and the atmosphere was thick with intrigue and danger. Turpin, clad in a simple, dark coat and hat, sits confidently in the saddle, his eyes scanning the horizon for any signs of pursuit. Black Bess, a sleek and powerful mare, strains at the bit, eager to carry her master further from the law. Turpin's legend grew with each successful robbery, and he became a folk hero to many. His exploits were the stuff of tales told around campfires and in taverns, and his name became synonymous with daring and adventure. But the life of a highwayman was a precarious one, and Turpin knew that every ride could be his last. Despite the danger, Turpin's spirit remained undaunted. He continued to elude capture, always one step ahead of the law, until his eventual arrest in 1739. Even in prison, Turpin's legend lived on, and he went down in history as one of England's most notorious and daring highwaymen. This photograph, taken from the vast and historic collection at Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of adventure, danger, and intrigue. It serves as a reminder of the enduring power of legend and the human spirit, even in the face of adversity.
