EDITORS COMMENTS
(Retreat from Kabul: First Day), a captivating coloured engraving by the skilled hands of French artists de Villain and Karl Loeillot, was published by Ostervald l'Aine in Paris in 1842. This evocative print is an essential historical record of a pivotal moment during the First Anglo-Afghan War (1838-1842). The scene depicted in the engraving captures the chaotic and desperate retreat of the British and Indian soldiers from Kabul, Afghanistan, on the first day of their withdrawal. The British East India Company, under the command of Sir William Macnaghten, had invaded Afghanistan in 1838 with the intention of extending their influence in Central Asia. However, the invasion resulted in a series of disastrous events, including the assassination of Macnaghten and the massacre of British residents in Kabul. The engraving vividly portrays the chaos and desperation of the retreating soldiers and civilians. The crowd of people, including women and children, are shown pushing and shoving each other, trying to board the few available carts and horses for the long and perilous journey back to India. In the background, the city of Kabul is engulfed in smoke from the burning buildings, while the mountains loom ominously in the distance. The Retreat from Kabul was a significant military disaster for the British, resulting in the loss of thousands of lives and a major blow to their imperial ambitions in Central Asia. This beautifully detailed and colourful engraving is a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the challenges faced by soldiers and civilians during times of conflict.
