EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph, Princess Cecilie of Greece, née Princess Cecilie of Sweden (1911-1937), is captured in a tender moment with her newborn son, Prince Alexander of Hesse and by Rhine (b. 14 April 1933). The Princess, who was one of the four sisters of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, beams with joy as she cradles her second child, her eyes filled with love and pride. Born in Athens, Greece, Princess Cecilie was the eldest daughter of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg. She was raised in exile in Switzerland following the Greco-Turkish War and later married Prince Ernst Ludwig of Hesse and by Rhine in 1931. Their union produced four children: Princess Theodora (b. 1936), Prince Alexander, Princess Irene (b. 1935), and Prince Michael (b. 1940). Princess Cecilie's younger brother, Prince Philip, would go on to marry Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom in 1947. The connection between the two royal families, Greek and Hesse, was further strengthened through their sisterly bond. The photograph, taken in 1933, captures the innocence and beauty of new life, as well as the deep love and devotion between a mother and her child. The Princess's elegant and timeless style, reminiscent of the era, adds to the historical significance of the image. This poignant moment in time offers a glimpse into the lives of the royal sisters and their families, providing a fascinating insight into the history of European royalty.
