EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph, His Imperial Highness Prince Sehzade Mehmed Ertugrul Efendi (1912-1944) is seen standing on the deck of the British naval vessel HMS Ajax, surrounded by his attendants, in January 1923. The last crown prince of the Ottoman Empire, Mehmed Ertugrul was forcibly removed from Turkey following the fall of the Sultanate and the establishment of the Turkish Republic under Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. The image captures a moment of transition and upheaval in Turkish history. The prince, dressed in the traditional Ottoman attire of a red fez and a long, flowing robe, looks out at the horizon with a determined expression, as if contemplating the uncertain future that lay ahead. The British naval vessel, a symbol of the foreign intervention in Turkish affairs, looms in the background, underscoring the sense of loss and exile that the prince and his entourage were experiencing. The photograph offers a glimpse into the life of a prince who was born into a royal lineage that dated back centuries but was now being consigned to history. Mehmed Ertugrul was just 11 years old when the Ottoman Sultanate was abolished, and he spent the rest of his life in exile, first in Malta and later in France. Despite the challenges he faced, he remained committed to preserving the memory and legacy of the Ottoman Empire. The image is a poignant reminder of the historical upheavals that shaped the modern Turkish state and the human stories that lie behind the political and military events of the past. It is a testament to the resilience and determination of individuals in the face of adversity and the enduring power of tradition and heritage.
