This striking image captures the moment of arrest of Father Calixte, a devoted teacher of the Frères des Écoles Chrétiennes, during the tumultuous events of the Paris Commune in April 1871. The Paris Commune was a revolutionary government established in Paris following the Franco-Prussian War, which lasted from March 18 to May 28, 1871. The Commune was characterized by its radical socialist and secularist policies, which often clashed with the Catholic Church and its clergy. In this photograph, Father Calixte, identified as Frère Calixte, is seen being arrested by members of the Communard militia. Despite the widespread persecution of priests and religious during this period, Father Calixte was one of the fortunate few who were eventually released. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the religious and political tensions that gripped France during this turbulent time in its history. The Frères des Écoles Chrétiennes, also known as the Christian Brothers, were a religious teaching order founded in Ireland in 1802. They had been active in France since the early 19th century, and by the time of the Paris Commune, they operated numerous schools throughout the country. The order's commitment to education and its close association with the Catholic Church made its members a target for the secularist policies of the Paris Commune.
